There are thousands of species of lichen, in a variety of shapes and colors. A lichen is formed when a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium form a symbiotic relationship. The fungus provides a home, protection, and nutrients, while the algae or cyanobacteria produce food through photosynthesis. This symbiotic relationship enables lichen to survive in extreme conditions where neither the fungus nor the alga could survive alone.
