This little bird owes its name to its habit of wedging a nut into a crevice of a tree and splitting it with its strong bill. The many varieties of nuthatches live in temperate forests, mostly in the Northern hemisphere. In colder climates, nuthatches will participate in communal roosting to conserve heat. Pygmy nuthatches have been found roosting in groups containing over 150 birds!
